WoW Gold Guide: Profiting With The Jewelcrafting Profession
Posted on 2010 under WoW Gold Tips | No Comment5 Jan
Jewelcrafting is often regarded as the most profitable profession, it produces many of the items which are high in demand. Jewelcrafting is widely known as a Gem Cutting profession, and while you can make quite a profit from simply cutting Gems, there are more options available to a Jewelcrafter wishing to maximize their income. The Prospecting ability can help a Jewelcrafter obtain Gems to cut, but there is also a demand for uncut gems.
Other profiting options can include Crafting Jewelry and most importantly the Jewelcrafting Daily.
Gem Cutting
There are various types and qualities of Gems, all have profiting potential, though some yield a much larger margin than others.
To reach your maximum profit potential, you will also want to sell Uncut Gems.
Epic Gems
Epic Gems are the greatest quality gem currently available, so it is no surprise they are high in demand. There are various gem cuts which can be bought with Dalaran Jewelcrafter’s Tokens earned through the Jewelcrafting Daily, it can be fairly overwhelming trying to decide which gem cut recipes are best to buy, which would sell best. Which you choose to buy will depend on the supply of Gems you have, as well as the market for that type on your server.
Raw Epic Gems can be obtained numerous ways: Prospecting Titanium Ore; bought with Emblem of Heroism (20 badges for primary colors: Red, Blue, Yellow; 10 badges for secondary colors: Orange, Purple, Green); bought with honor, 10k honor per gem (you can also gain extra honor buying Wintergrasp Commendations with 30x Stone Keeper’s Shards); you can have an Alchemist Transmute gems for you; also, Epic Gems can be found in Icy Prism, though the drop rate is not so great.
Now that you have a source of gems, what exactly do you focus on trying to sell? Which you sell will depend on your server and the current gem market. This is a listing of the more popular cuts of Epic Gems:
Red: Bold Cardinal Ruby / Delicate Cardinal Ruby / Fractured Cardinal Ruby / Runed Cardinal Ruby
Yellow: Brilliant King’s Amber / Quick King’s Amber / Smooth King’s Amber / Thick King’s Amber
Blue: Lustrous Majestic Zircon / Solid Majestic Zircon / Sparkling Majestic Zircon / Stormy Majestic Zircon
Orange: Accurate Ametrine / Deadly Ametrine / Etched Ametrine / Glinting Ametrine / Luminous Ametrine /Potent Ametrine / Reckless Ametrine / Stalwart Ametrine / Veiled Ametrine / Wicked Ametrine
Purple: Defender’s Dreadstone / Glowing Dreadstone / Puissant Dreadstone / Purified Dreadstone / Royal Dreadstone / Shifting Dreadstone / Sovereign Dreadstone
Green: Dazzling Eye of Zul / Enduring Eye of Zul / Jagged Eye of Zul / Seer’s Eye of Zul
Rare Gems
Since the release of Epic quality gems, the rare gem market has taken a turn. You may think that there is barely a market for Rare gems now, but rest assured, the Rare gem market still thrives. It is true, fewer people are buying Rare gems to fill their gear, but more people are buying gems to Transmute Epic Gems. There will always be people who will prefer to buy a lower end gem due to how much cheaper it can be compared to Epic, as well. Currently, due to the fact that people are Transmuting Rare gems into Epic gems, the uncut Rare gems are selling more frequently than cut. It is suggested that if you wish to use up your Rare uncut gems, that you have an Alchemist transmute them into Epic gems for you.
Meta Gems
Meta gems are a great way to profit, there is always a demand for them. You will need a source for raw Meta gems: an Alchemist (transmute spec is best, more product per materials). There are certain Meta gem cuts which sell better than others: Chaotic Skyflare Diamond, Ember Skyflare Diamond, Austere Earthsiege Diamond, Bracing Earthsiege Diamond, Eternal Earthsiege Diamond, Insightful Earthsiege Diamond and Relentless Earthsiege Diamond. Selling the uncut gems can add a little extra profit, though they are likely to sell less than a cut Meta gem.
Uncommon Gems
You may find that from prospecting so much ore, you have an abundance of Uncommon quality gems. There are several things you can do to use these up and profit rather than having them sit in your bank. One of the more obvious ideas is to use your “cool colored” gems in the Icy Prism recipe, this will use up your Shadow Crystal, Dark Jade and Chalcedony.
You are now likely to have too much Sun Crystal, Bloodstone and Huge Citrine than you know what to do with. To use these gems up it is suggested you craft Bloodstone Bands, Crystal Citrine Necklaces andSun Rock Rings and have them disenchanted. Each item will yield 1-2 Infinite Dust, 1-2 Lesser Cosmic Essence or rarely a Small Dream Shard. While this may seem minimal, when you do a mass combination of materials you are likely to come out with a decent amount of gold selling the Disenchanted materials.
If you do not have an Enchanter, or have someone who can Disenchant for you, you can always sell stacks of the raw gems in the Auction House. It will not be as much gold, but it is certainly better than having them rot in your bank.
Prismatic Gems
Prismatic Gems had been fairly useless throughout the Wrath of the Lich King expansion, though once Patch 3.2 hit, Nightmare Tears were released. The preceding Prismatic Gem, Enchanted Tear, was far too lacking to be worthy enough to fulfill Meta Gem requirements. Nightmare Tears provide a great stat boost as well as fill most Meta Gem requirements with a single gem. While they can be expensive to make, Nightmare Tears can boost your profit from Jewelcrafting Dailies immensely. Even if you would prefer to spend your Dalaran Jewelcrafter’s Tokens on recipes, you should be able to buy 1x Dragon’s Eye and 5xInfinite Dust to combine and sell for a handsome profit. Just be sure to avoid flooding the Auction House, this will bring more attention from others trying to make gold, one or two at a time is suggested.
Prospecting for a Profit
Prospecting ore bought from the Auction House and reselling the gems can be a great income source, though it can be risky. Since you can only prospect a stack of ore four times, you need to be sure the result you get from those four prospects will earn you enough gold to cover the cost of the stack of ore. Each prospect will yield 1-4 gems, due to how random the quantity returned is, it may take a couple stacks to break even. Of course, if you gather your own ore to be prospected then there is far less risk.
Crafting Jewelry
Crafting various jewelry can prove to be quite profitable, but with such a range of recipes, which pieces are best to craft?
Epic Jewelry
Epic jewelry crafted by Jewelcrafters is far from best in slot, but those that are fresh to level 80 often seek these as starter rings and necks. For rings Titanium Earthguard Ring, Titanium Impact Band and Titanium Spellshock Ring; for necks Titanium Earthguard Chain, Titanium Impact Choker, Titanium Spellshock Necklace. You will need to test the market on your server for which are highest in demand, often the caster pieces sell more frequently than others. Weekdays will prove to be difficult selling these items as people are more focused on raiding. Weekends are the ideal times to place your rings and necks, when the highest population is active and many are leveling their main characters or alts.
Rare Jewelry
There is a wide range of Rare quality jewelry that you can consider crafting and selling for a profit. Some are certainly more profitable than others, and will require prime Auction placement to obtain a maximum profit. PVP jewelry is often the highest in demand as it can be difficult to obtain necks and rings with resilience. Emerald Choker, Scarlet Signet and Savage Titanium Ring are all great starter pieces for physical DPS looking to PVP. Sky Sapphire Amulet, Savage Titanium Band and Runed Mana Band are great starter pieces for casters looking to PVP. Each piece will sell for a profit, to gain the maximum profit you will want to time your auctions to be active for Tuesdays and the weekends (Thursday through Sunday), these are prime times for PVP customers.
Uncommon Jewelry
While you are prospecting Saronite Ore, you are likely to end up with an abundance of Gems, both uncommon and rare. You can have the rare gems Transmuted by an Alchemist, but what do you do with the uncommon gems? You can do one of three things: you can sell stacks of uncut gems in the Auction House, you can have them cut and sell them to the vendor for a higher profit (pre-cut sell for 25s, cut sell for 50s), or you can have them crafted into jewelry to be disenchanted by an Enchanter.
Disenchanting always provides a great profit, regardless of what type of material you try to sell. A bonus to crafting jewelry and having it disenchanted, the materials gained will sell quicker and you will end up with a larger profit due to not requiring a deposit on Enchanting materials. Crafting Bloodstone Bands (2xCrystallized Earth + 1x Bloodstone per), Crystal Chalcedony Amulets (2x Crystallized Earth + 1xChalcedony), Crystal Citrine Necklaces (2x Crystallized Earth + 1x Huge Citrine) and Sun Rock Rings (2xCrystallized Earth + 1x Sun Crystal) are all a great way to use up uncommon gems laying around. Each item will yield 1-2 Infinite Dust, 1-2 Lesser Cosmic Essence or rarely a Small Dream Shard.
Jewelcrafting Daily
Completing the Jewelcrafting Daily is by far one of the easiest ways to make a profit from the Jewelcrafting profession. You will require a character level of 65 and at least 375 in Jewelcrafting before you can obtain Jewelcrafting Dailies. Upon completing any of the Jewelcrafting Dailies, not only will you be rewarded with 13g 23s (level 80) you will also be rewarded with 1x Dalaran Jewelcrafter’s Token, in turn you are then given the option to buy recipes or Dragon’s Eyes. Due to the popularity of Jewelcrafting and the wide use of Jeweler’s Gems, Dragon’s Eyes are fairly popular and sell for a nice amount on the Auction House. To Maximize on this profiting possibility, it is suggested you sell your Dragon’s Eyes in the evenings on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, there will be less competition and a higher demand from those getting upgrades.
In addition to selling the raw Dragon’s Eyes, another option would be to cut it into a Nightmare Tear and place it to be sold on the Auction House. The recipe for the Nightmare Tear can be bought with 4x Dalaran Jewelcrafter’s Token.
